Karaoke Etiquette: 7 rules to stick by Posted by Platinum Karaoke · January 06, 2019 Karaoke is the ideal mix of a bar hangout and performance showcase. To be a better place, the world needs to hear you sing and you’ve already got your first ten songs picked out in your head. But before you start loading those sweet tunes into the machine, here are some general rules of etiquette to ensure that your songfest is just as enjoyable for you as it is for your audience. There is nothing like singing karaoke to get the adrenaline pumping! Things can easily get out of hand. Follow these tips to ensure that everyone has a good karaoke time. It’s all about R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Remember that this is not a competition. You are just having some fun. You are not a superstar singing in front of your adoring fans. There’s no reason to get upset if you don’t sing well, or if someone sings “your” song or you have to wait for your turn. And never “Boo” any performance, EVER! Don’t mic hog! Never jump in on other people’s songs and hijack their moment. If someone is performing let them be the centre of attention. Also, never go the sneaky way to double up on someone’s performance. Usually there are 2 microphones with the player and someone appoints themselves as everybody else’s backup singer. Put. Down. That. Microphone. Seriously! Don’t force anyone to sing For some people, getting up on the stage and singing a song is their biggest fear. So, if they are forced to sing, they might never come back to karaoke parties. People who don’t sing rather just enjoy performances are precious audience that you don’t wanna loose. Therefore, a brief good-natured encouragement is fine, but you really don’t wanna drag someone unnecessarily to the stage. Never Boo anyone Always remember that Karaoke is not just about fun and enjoyment, it is also about respect and encouragement. Even if someone doesn’t sing good enough, you must respect his courage to try. Don’t stand infront of the monitor when someone is singing This is an absolute no-no when doing karaoke! The lyrics are usually flashed on an LED TV screen. Standing infront of the monitor can block the view of the singer and hurdle your karaoke fun. Don’t Butcher the lyrics People take karaoke very seriously and so should you. Every performance is important to make the event a success. So, if you are planning to hit the stage make sure you choose a song that you are familiar with and can sing without butchering the lyrics. Equipment is not cheap. Don’t abuse it! Be sensible while using the karaoke equipment as it is not cheap. Mind not to tangle the microphone wires around your feet or using the speakers and amplifiers as furniture. Remember that “If broken consider sold” rule might apply here. Karaoke is an art that if practiced according to a few principles, anyone is more than capable of putting on a show that will delight friends and amuse strangers.
