How to survive a Karaoke night when you can’t sing?
Are you afraid that you are a very bad singer? Are you a virgin karaoker? Have you received your first invitation to a karaoke party? Are you thinking of RSVPing “Sorry, out of town that weekend”?
“What if I sing badly? What if I don’t know the lyrics? Gasp... what if they laugh?!”, that’s exactly how most of us react when we get an invitation to a karaoke party! Everyone has certain inhibitions and apprehension when it comes to performing on stage in front of an audience. But that does not mean that we don’t even give it a shot. And what’s there to lose???.... absolutely nothing!
Luckily for you, we give you a few pointers, so you won't embarrass yourself too much and maybe come out of this not only unscathed but with a winning musical number under your belt.
Pick your song wisely
If you're not a good singer, the best thing you can do is pick a crowd pleaser. Sing a song that is so ingrained in our culture and so beloved that everyone will sing along loudly, muffling your inability to hit certain notes. Also, try to pick a song that is not longer than 3 minutes. After 3 minutes, even a hit song starts to wither off. Also, handling a 3-minute performance will be easier than a 6-minute duration song.
Do your homework
A little homework goes a long way. Before you hit the karaoke bar, think about the songs you love most and know best. Then ask yourself if this song is in your range. Once you figure out the song that works for you try practicing it a couple of times before your performance. This would give you the confidence to stand in front of a live audience and perform.

Don’t go first, but don’t go last either
Let someone else kick things off so you’ll feel a little more comfortable after watching someone else go and not get chased out with torches and pitchforks. Also, you’ll have time to grab a drink or two and relax. But word to the wise, don’t get sloppy drunk before you sing.
While going first might be scary but going last can be even scarier. You don’t want to give yourself too much time to think. Your nerves will take over and drive you crazy. Aim for the middle.
Enjoy your performance
Think that you are in your bathroom taking a hot shower and singing your heart out, not for an audience, but for yourself. Enjoy your performance uninhibited as if no one is watching. If you enjoy your performance only then will your audience enjoy it too.
